Slab City CA 8/2018

Slab city is located in South East California approximately 50 miles from the Mexicali border.  The city sits on 631.345 acres and was the marine training facility for field and anti-aircraft artillery units for three years during World War II.

By 1955 all the buildings were dismantled but the slabs remained. In 1961 the department of defense conveyed an restricted quit claim deed to the state of California. Later California legislation required that the revenue generated from this property will go to the California state teachers retirement system.

By 1965 migration had begun to slab city. Living arrangements on the land – that has no public amenities – are challenging; also very tenuous – as all the residents are squatters. After visiting – during the hottest part of the summer – there times it reach 126F – for five days in August 2018, I try to make no judgment and my opinions change on a daily basis. For more insight – if the concept is right or wrong – there is a plethora of information on the web about Slab City. The closest I come to an opinion are the text in my photos.
